Exploring Audio in Art
Newton, Nancy, Snowy Perch, Mixed Media Drawing, 36 x 28 inches
Nancy Newton derives inspiration from other forms of art, such as the “free-flowing” interpretations of music to create intricate, abstract mixed media pieces. Throughout From the Sea/From the Past, Newton demonstrates an affinity for creating interpretive works inspired by fellow artists.
Nancy’s method of interpreting and illustrating music in her work resonated with me as I can’t paint in silence. Whether it be music, a show, or nature sounds, I need to listen to something to paint. Naturally, sound influences my work heavily. I’d invite audiences to experiment with sound in similar ways.
Audiences are encouraged to create artwork in response to a piece of audio; a favourite song, an alarm, a voice, a lack of sound, or any sound particularly interesting to the listener. Materials may vary depending on what creative approaches the sounds evoke. How might sound serve as inspiration for building work? What facets of a piece of sound evoke which artistic approach? Does a piece of music make the listener want to create brushstrokes? Collage? Do the interpretations change with time?
I’d like to introduce people to the idea of engaging different senses in their artwork and how their interpretations of sound reflect in their work.
