Catalina Bravo: Water through Abstract Lenses

Image
Water through Abstract Lenses Catalino Bravo "Sea Shell Cradle" Acrylic on Canvas, Nancy Newton Nancy Newton's work FROM THE SEA / FROM THE PAST at the Propeller Art Gallery was very inspirational. Nancy talks about how nature and music inspired her to make all her work for her “From the Sea” mixed media pieces. As someone who was always by the water, whether it was the ocean, rivers, lakes, cascades, etc., I felt this viewing really connected me to my roots and my life.  Growing up in Chile, I was always surrounded by nature. This is something I miss so deeply.  I can see, from viewing Nancy’s work, how well she captures the rhythm and energy of the sea in her own terms. I have always thought that different bodies of water give different vibes and energies, which can be transformed and represented in many ways and forms in art. My own family has always been surrounded by art and I grew up being exposed to art. My dad and my grandmother are very artistically inclined.

Exploring Music  Nancy Newton’s latest exhibition at Propeller Gallery showcased two collections of her work; From The Sea, and From The Past . Newton, N, Flying Over.  [Mixed Media Collage, 23 x 32 inches] Propeller Gallery, Toronto, ON, Canada.  Nancy's work in From The Sea is inspired by Canadian musician R. Murray Schafer’s music. She spent 10 years exploring landscapes and making art inspired by how she felt by listening to his music.  To view more of her work from the exhibit you can visit this link to the Propeller Gallery website: https://propellerartgallery.com/exhibitions/from-the-sea-from-the-past-nancy-newton/   If you would like to get a deeper understanding of Nancy’s creative process, I have provided links to 3 songs by R. Alan Yang: Autumn Song

Image
Interaction of Sound and Brushstroke; Chinese and Western Landscape Painting Across Time and Space Alan Yang -  Interpretive planning Autumn Song, Mixed Media Drawing "Autumn Song" presents Nancy Newton's unique interpretation of the autumn landscape through mixed media painting. The artwork encompasses traditional elements of Chinese ink painting , reflecting reverence for nature. It is created with different brushstrokes and lines , conveying the tranquility and change of autumn, as well as the vitality of trees through seasonal transitions. —————————— 1. What would happen if we attempted to mimic these diverse brushstrokes with sound? One of the sound techniques commonly employed in the film industry is known as 'Foley.' This art, which played a pivotal role in the early days of sound cinema, is named after the sound artist Jack Donovan Foley, born in 1891. Foley artists, or sound designers, must employ their imagination to faithfully recreate the necessary s

Evan Willemse: The Wonder From The Sea/ From The Past

The Wonder From The Sea/ From The Past      I had the great pleasure to focus my energy on Nancy Newton's show From The Sea/ From The Past , that was shown at Propeller Art Gallery September 16 - October 1, 2023.  Unfortunately the show isn't available in person anymore, but there are still videos and pictures online that allow you to view the show. Recently I even located a podcast that Nancy, as guest, stared in that really helped me experience her work, and the exploration and experimentation that sparked her past works. Nancy Newton, Flying Over , Mixed Media Collage, 2023     Some of  Nancy's work takes inspiration from R. Murry Schafer's Dream-e-scape which is a 20 minute long orchestra song. She also works with patterns and visual aspects found in beach objects, but mostly, for From the Sea, from shells that were created in marine ecosystems.  She first started to sketch shells in her sketchbook, and, in doing so, realized that they represented mini universes

Zero Sharma - Exploring Audio in Art

Exploring Audio in Art                                                  Newton, Nancy,  Snowy Perch , Mixed Media Drawing, 36 x 28 inches Nancy Newton derives inspiration from other forms of art, such as the “free-flowing” interpretations of music to create intricate, abstract mixed media pieces. Throughout From the Sea/From the Past, Newton demonstrates an affinity for creating interpretive works inspired by fellow artists.  Nancy’s method of interpreting and illustrating music in her work resonated with me as I can’t paint in silence. Whether it be music, a show, or nature sounds, I need to listen to something to paint. Naturally, sound influences my work heavily. I’d invite audiences to experiment with sound in similar ways.  Audiences are encouraged to create artwork in response to a piece of audio; a favourite song, an alarm, a voice, a lack of sound, or any sound particularly interesting to the listener. Materials may vary depending on what creative approaches the sounds evoke.

Rachel Van Egmond: Representation: What Does it Take?

Image
Representation: What Does it Take?  We all have our own way to represent things, and imagery stirs different reactions in different people.  So how are we able to visually communicate?  The language we use to portray things often means more than the image itself.  Warm Breeze, Mixed Media Collage , 21.75 x 21.5 inches Nancy Newton                                                                                                                                          Topaz Lake, Acrylic on canvas; 3 x 4 ft                                                                                        Rachel Van Egmond  In response to Nancy Newton’s work, I wanted to discuss the idea of representational art. My own work is quite representational, and I am not often drawn to abstract work. However, I think there is a lot to be said for the innate feelings that abstract can draw out, where objective portrayals cannot. I think the two examples above show that clearly. The goal of my work was purely a
